May 2, 2011   //   by jel264   //   News  //  No Comments

On April 29th Cornell Cooperative Extension staff, CommuniTree Stewards and Master Gardener volunteers joined the students and staff at Bellevue Elementary to celebrate Arbor Day by planting 13 trees at Bellevue Elementary School. Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney and City of Syracuse Parks and Recreation Commissioner Baye Muhammad helped the students to plant the trees.

This year’s Arbor Day marked the 21st year Syracuse received Tree City USA status.  Ken Lynch, the Regional Director of NYS Department of Environmental Conservation gave the Tree City USA proclamation to Commissioner Muhammad.

The day was also marked by the start of Onondaga County’s Save the Rain tree planting program.  Executive Joanie Mahoney announced that the County intends to plant 8,500 trees by 2018 – over half of these trees will be planted by community groups.
